We're two anglers from Los Angeles who found our way to fly fishing through very different paths and discovered that the best part of the sport isn’t the fish - it’s the people.

Frankie, who is indigenous with Mexican ancestry, spent much of his life fishing while building a distinguished career in wildland firefighting, serving as a smokejumper, captain and Hotshot. Following a career-ending injury, he found healing and purpose through Project Healing Waters as he accompanied his dad, a disabled veteran of the US Navy. Alongside disabled veterans and fellow anglers, he discovered fly fishing and immersed himself in the craft, eventually developing a level of skill and dedication that transformed his life.

Frankie has worked throughout the fly fishing industry in Montana and California for over a decade, helping anglers of all experience levels pursue their passion on waters ranging from local trout streams and the surf to world-renouned destinations. His experience in fly shops, guiding customers, teaching technique, and representing some of the most respected brands in the industry has given him a deep appreciation for both the technical side of the sport and the relationships that make it meaningful.

Noël spent much of her childhood in the Western Sierra, learning the rhythm of rivers and wild trout streams. After earning advanced degrees in biology and education she spent years teaching in urban classrooms, believing that education, mentorship, and opportunity can change lives. While raising five children, she returned to fly fishing and found herself captivated by the sport’s blend of skill, simplicity, curiosity, and connection to the natural world. It rekindled a lifelong love of fishing and wild places. As a biracial Black woman in a sport where diversity has not always been visible, she became passionate about creating spaces where everyone feels welcome, represented, and encouraged to belong.

In recent years, navigating a difficult cancer diagnosis has reinforced what the rivers taught her long ago: time is precious, wild places heal, and meaningful community matters. Fly fishing became more than a pasttime - it became a practice of presence, resilience, and gratitude.

Three years ago our paths crossed, and what began as conversations about fishing became a shared vision. We dreamed of creating more than a retail store. We wanted to build a gathering place - a fly shop where newcomers feel welcome, experienced anglers find community, and lifelong friendships are formed.

Our shop is rooted in the belief that fly fishing belongs to everyone. Whether your water is a mountain trout stream, the surf, a desert lake, or a distant destination, you’ll find people here who share your passion. We celebrate the traditions of the sport while helping shape its future through education, mentorship, conservation, and genuine hospitality.

When you support our shop, you’re supporting real people, real relationships, and a community built around a shared love of fly fishing. Every visit, every conversation, every fly tied at the vise helps strengthen the culture we hope to pass on to the next generation. Welcome. Pull up a chair, share a story, and stay awhile. The coffee is on, the vise is spinning, and there’s always room for one more angler.

our story

Why we’re here

Fly fishing has given us more than fish. It has given us mentors, lifelong friendships, quiet places to heal, and a deeper connection to the natural world. We believe those experiences should be available to everyone - not just the people who have traditionally found their way into the sport. Our hope is to grow a fly fishing community that is more welcoming, more diverse, and more connected, while honoring the traditions and craftsmanship that make fly fishing so special.

Opening Westside Fly is our way of giving something back. We’ve invested everything we have into creating a place where people can learn, tie flies, share stories, ask questions, and feel like they belong - whether it’s their first day holding a fly rod or their 50th season on the water. We hope this shop becomes something we build together, because the strongest communities aren’t built by a business. They’re built by the people who walk through its doors.

Stay in the Loop

We’re building something new for fly anglers on the Westside - classes, trips, tying nights, and a place to gather. Sign up to get early access to events and updates as we build toward opening.

Thanks for believing in us.
